The Snawfus gift

Dolly & the Dodecahedron

There is only one. Twelve faces — or twenty. The dual is not a second gift.

Dolly is early twenties. Leather jacket over a long flowing skirt. Work boots. One hand in the pocket, the other holding the glowing golden dodecahedron — twelve faces, etched with symbols, warm as a kept coal. The Snawfus stepped out of sapphire Blue Mist and left it with her. After that she could understand the farm animals. Ocean was the first voice. The latch was the first complaint.

The gift is not a pet and it is not a weapon. It is a hearing, a home, and a gate. Squarefolk would call it a pretty lamp. Cloverfolk know better than to ask to hold it.

The gift as an icosahedron: twenty triangular wood-and-brass faces, gold filigree, blue lightning along the seams, a heart-gear at the center
Left — the icosahedron. Twenty triangles. Pointed. Twelve corners.
The gift as a dodecahedron: twelve pentagonal wood-and-brass faces, gold filigree, a gear at the heart, constellations, blue lightning along the seams
Right — the dodecahedron. Twelve pentagons. Broader. Twenty corners.
How they differ

Same gift. Different skin.

Count the faces first. That is the whole argument.

Dodecahedron (right). Twelve faces, and each face is a pentagon — five sides. Twenty corners. Thirty edges. It sits broader, like a kept coal with a gear for a heart. This is the form the Snawfus first put in Dolly’s hand, and the form the property department called a prop in 1931.

Icosahedron (left). Twenty faces, and each face is a triangle. Twelve corners. Thirty edges — the same thirty. It sits pointed, like a lantern that grew edges. This is the form that shows in the barn when the engine goes quiet and the gift wants light instead of clockwork.

They are duals. Each face of one answers a corner of the other: twelve faces answer twelve corners; twenty corners answer twenty faces. The edge-count does not change. The wood, the brass, the star-maps, and the blue fire in the seams do not change. Squarefolk see two lamps. Cloverfolk see one gift turning itself inside out.

What the faces do

Look at it and you can see why people counted two. Some faces are warm gold and quiet. Some are clockwork. Some are star-maps. Blue fire runs the seams when a face is working. It is still one gift. It lets Dolly hear the farm. It keeps Vance Randolph’s Ozark wonders — the Jimplicute, the Wampus Cat, the Hinge-Tailed Bing Buffer, and the rest — who go in and out at will. When a rescue needs a door, a face opens on a blue Rescue Gate. Dolly and Charlotte do not collect magickal beasts. The caboose fetches ordinary critters. The Dodecahedron already has the old company.

The inner surface

A map of the twelve faces

Unfold the gift and the old company is already walking. Each pentagon is a country. The seams are only paper until a face is working.

The left flower is the hill: Blue Mist at the heart, timber and slope around it, the Hidebehind where a portrait will not stay. The ridge run carries the Wampus Cat toward the other world. The bridge is Devil’s Hole. The right flower is water, stone, and sky. A face opens. A face closes. No crates.

Left flower of the gift: antique watercolor map of the hill countries — Snawfus, Jimplicute, Hidebehind, Kingdoodle, Side-Hill Hoofer, Wampus Cat

Right flower of the gift: antique watercolor map of stone, water, and sky — Bing Buffer, Gowrow, Gollywog, White River Behemoth, Giasticutus, Galooous
Right flower — stone, water, and sky. Devil’s Hole on the bridge.

The dual

When it becomes an icosahedron

A dodecahedron and an icosahedron are duals. Each face of one answers a vertex of the other. The gift knows this without being told.

Sometimes the twelve pentagons fold into twenty triangles. The wood-and-brass engine goes quiet. What Dolly holds then is a lantern of light — same warmth, same hearing, same gate — only the skin has changed. Squarefolk would say she brought a different lamp into the barn. Cloverfolk count faces and know better.

It is still the Snawfus gift. It has not been traded, split, or replaced. Twenty faces is one of the ways twelve faces tell the truth.

Who stands in the picture

Dolly — keeper of the farm, Goat Maiden when the hay bill comes due, resident of the Quonset with Charlotte. Prefers heirloom tomatoes and solitude. Hums to morning dew. Time traveler.

The Snawfus — not in this frame, but the gift is his. Majestic white stag, pearl coat, feathered wings, dogwood blossoms on the antlers instead of points. Speaks in feeling, not words.

The porch in the painting is a ridge porch at dusk, lantern on the wall, Blue Mist in the folds of the hills. It is not Madge and Ira’s cream wicker porch, and it is not a catalog railing. It is the hour the gift is still warm.

The same years as Springfield

The pictures had already learned to talk. While Vance Randolph kept porches and disc recorders in the Ozarks — Springfield, Springdale, the Southern Hotel register — Dolly was on a rented soundstage in Hollywood filming The Goat Maiden.

Call it the Metal Goat year of 1931. Poverty Row, Gower Gulch: a short schedule, a klieg, a chair, a slate that reads NOW FILMING. One still is the close-up — pearls, a sequined wrap, the same twelve-faced gift the property department would call a prop. She is explaining the Dodecahedron and its office in time travel. The other still is the floor itself: velvet, wave in the hair, the camera on wheels, the sign in the shot so the extra knows which picture this is.

Squarefolk in the preview house hear a B picture. Cloverfolk hear the gift telling on itself. A time traveler can sit for Randolph’s century and still make the morning milking. The Maiden on the screen funds the hill. The woman on the ridge porch is the same pair of hands. The whole door is The Producer from Tomorrow.
