The homestead ridge: barn, farmhouse, caboose, clover
The homestead

What the farm is

Arkatype Farms is not a petting zoo and it is not a calendar picture. It is a working storybook place on a ridge in Arktopia County, with more than one roof: an old white farmhouse, a Quonset hut with many rooms under one arch, a galvanized barn that wears the farm’s name, a short stretch of track, Willow Pond under a weeping willow, and a garden Dolly would rather tend than talk about.

Most days the Caboose sits on the rails like any other retired car. Most nights the animals argue about grain latches, nesting spots, and whether the sunset is for the belly or the soul. Some evenings a sapphire mist slides off the high ridges. That is the Blue Mist of the old hills. Cloverfolk go looking for it. Squarefolk call it weather.

The farm is also a sanctuary. Magickal beasts already live in the Dodecahedron. The caboose fetches ordinary critters — heifers, barn cats, library cats — and brings them home to clover. Once they arrive, the Dodecahedron’s company helps grant them language. The work has a longer horizon than next week’s hay.

On the ground

  • The old white farmhouse — porch toward the ridges. Grandma Madge and Grandpa Ira still live here. More than one sitting room: a parlor with a rust sofa, and a library of curved stacks. Dolly and Charlotte sit in both when they walk over.
  • The Quonset hut — Dolly and Charlotte’s home. High curved ceiling like a giant tunnel. Many rooms under one rib: a quiet rug room, a great room with a glass end-wall, a walnut kitchen with one olive cabinet, and a writing nook for Dear Dolly.
  • Friday field restaurant: rescued food from the Arktopia County Food Closet; Arthur, Sterling, and Mara deliver, then serve; they do not live here
  • Galvanized barn with wood doors and a weathered ARKATYPE FARMS board — Ira’s side of the yard — and a grain bin whose latch Ocean will not let anyone forget
  • Heirloom tomato rows Dolly hums to in the dew
  • Willow Pond, now under Professor Gruff’s Great Pond Schedule
  • A grounded barn-red caboose lettered Charlotte’s Critters / Critter Line
  • Clover pasture, maple shade, and a garden path that sometimes is only a garden path

Under the ground, over the ridge

  • Blue Mist that is not ordinary fog
  • One golden dodecahedron — the Snawfus gift — that lets Dolly hear the farm, keeps the old Ozark helpers, and can open a Rescue Gate. Dolly & the Dodecahedron
  • The Arktopia County Library, with a night door squarefolk see as stained glass
  • Silver-thread wormholes that smell of ozone and old parchment
  • Time rifts the Caboose can take when the rails let go

How the farm stays standing

Dolly funds the place by performing as the Goat Maiden — a franchisable story character, the way Cinderella or Snow White is a character. People do not have to come to a park. The Maiden comes to them: weddings, birthdays, special events, a tray of drinks and a little of the hill in the room. On market mornings she dresses as the Maiden, Charlotte under the table, and sells two services from two cards — Goat Maiden bookings and lifestyle consulting — plus a few products, including custom aprons for bucklings.

The paper of record is Ozarks Goat News, published in Arktopia County by Professor Gruff, D.Capr., Emeritus of Comparative Bleating. The farm crew on that paper answers to Scoop, Inkhorn, Nanny Belle Quill, and kid reporter Button.

From pasture to future at the speed of light — but first, look into that grain latch.

Four doors, one hill. Gold is the shared accent — stars, rims, ribbon lettering. Each house keeps its own field.
