The household

Who keeps the hill

After the Snawfus gift, the farm is not a collection of chores. It is a community of thinkers, dreamers, and complainers. Dolly and Charlotte keep the Quonset hut — many rooms under one arch. Grandma Madge and Grandpa Ira keep the old white farmhouse. The pair still sit in that parlor when the house calls them over. Town desks — the Night Porter, Investigative Services, the Food Closet — live on The County.

Dolly

Keeper of the farm · Goat Maiden · lifestyle consulting · the Quonset

Early twenties. Eccentric. Leather jacket over long flowing skirts. Prefers heirloom tomatoes and solitude. Hums to morning dew. Time traveler. Lives in the Quonset hut with Charlotte — high curved ceiling like a giant tunnel, many rooms down the rib. Still crosses to the old white farmhouse parlor when Madge and Ira have the lamps on. Performs as the Goat Maiden so the hay and the mineral feeder stay honest. Saturday market: she dresses as the Maiden, Charlotte under the table, two business cards (Maiden bookings and lifestyle consulting), and custom aprons for bucklings so the boys keep their manners around the doelings and the dams. The golden dodecahedron has its own door: Dolly & the Dodecahedron.

Charlotte the border collie on the caboose platform

Charlotte

Conductor of record · Critter Line

Black-and-white female border collie. One blue eye, one brown. Sleeps in the Quonset with Dolly. Conductor of Charlotte’s Critter Caboose. On Fridays she is Maître d’ of the field restaurant, bow tie on the collar. Does not wait for the order. Takes the flank on a 1936 fence, works the helm when a rift opens, and writes the run down at the farm when the tracks lead home.

The Snawfus in Blue Mist with the golden dodecahedron

The Snawfus

Ozark spirit of the Blue Mist

Majestic white stag, pearl coat, feathered wings, dogwood blossoms on the antlers instead of points. Speaks in feeling, not words. Gave Dolly the glowing golden dodecahedron that lets her understand the farm animals.

The Jimplicute, a tall slender bark-colored tree-lizard, standing beside a giant pine

The Jimplicute

Timber helper · one face of the gift

Vance Randolph’s old wonder from We Always Lie to Strangers: a tall slender tree-lizard, bark-colored, bipedal among the pines — or a running black silhouette with a white pin-prick eye. Squarefolk lies said it walked the roads at night and grabbed throats. On this hill it lives in a face of the Dodecahedron and goes in and out at will. First filmed by Dolly and Charlotte in the Blue Mist valley, 2026. Girl-height that year. Larger in 2027. A colt of bark by 2028. Kin to highbehind, hidebehind, and gowrow. Timber only. See Blue Mist in the Valley, page 7.

The old white farmhouse

Madge and Ira still live in the original house. The porch faces the ridges. The house keeps more than one sitting room: a parlor with lamps and a rust sofa, and a library of curved mahogany stacks, cream chairs, and a teal sofa. Dolly and Charlotte do not sleep here, but they belong in both rooms when they walk over. The Quonset is down the way — Dolly’s roof, Charlotte’s roof, many rooms under the tunnel from The Five-Star Farm. Two human roofs. One hill.

Madge — Grandma — keeps the basket and the floral dress. Silver bun, cream cardigan, greens from the raised beds. She reads Dear Dolly aloud on the porch. Ira — Grandpa — keeps the stick and the overalls: red plaid under denim, wool cap, white beard. The galvanized barn with the ARKATYPE FARMS board is his side of the yard.

Ocean the ginger barn cat and Eudora the eldest goat

Ocean & Eudora

Barnyard philosophy desk

Ocean is the ginger barn cat: unimpressed, practical, talkative. First voice Dolly heard after the gift. Nags about the sticking grain-bin latch and the hidden tuna kibble. Torn ear from a future locust tree, now home.

Eudora is the eldest goat: philosophical, sunset-minded, inclined to ask whether we graze for the belly or the soul. She finds Ocean pedestrian. Ocean finds Eudora late for supper.

The rest of the talking yard

  • Bramble — flower-crowned pack goat. Leather panniers of lemonade and sparkling cider when the Goat Maiden works a wedding. Once kept Dolly’s tip bag on a buckle the whole moonlit search. Lives on the hill; works the events.
  • Clara — chicken. Coop politics, nesting-spot disputes, commentary on whose eggs are brown enough.
  • Tucker — black-and-white paint goat, reader, leader of the Chronos Caprines. Prefers the mahogany halls of the library to head-butting fences.
  • Jonas — farm goat, Tucker’s best friend, present when Ishmael turned out to be a key.
  • Piston — youngest and bravest of the three. Found the harness compartment. First to cry out at the giant moon over Arktopia-Prime.
  • Professor Gruff — white goat in a forest-green waistcoat; editor of Ozarks Goat News; author of the Great Pond Schedule.
  • Mr. & Mrs. Black and Mr. & Mrs. Brown — Muscovy pairs who share Willow Pond on the clock.

Helpers who keep a bay here

  • Duckster — Dolly’s personal vehicle. Sleeps in a side bay of the caboose the way a ladle sleeps in a drawer. Goes first when the White River forgets its banks.
  • Jimplicute — bark-colored tree-lizard of the timber. Portrait above. Comes out of a face when the mist is honest and goes home the same door.
  • Wampus Cat — shadowy six-legged speed, one of the Ozark wonders already at home in the Dodecahedron.
  • Hinge-Tailed Bing Buffer — segmented-tail defender. Useful when a robot dog will not take a hint.

There is only one Dodecahedron. The Snawfus gift lets Dolly hear the farm. The same twelve faces keep the folklore helpers and can open a blue Rescue Gate. Plates: The Arkatype Farms Bestiary. Full name-list: Fabulous Monsters.

Town people do not sleep on this page. The Night Porter, Mr. Jake and Mr. Elwood, and Arthur, Sterling, and Mara keep their desks on The County.
